Retimo

Retimo was my graduation project at the University of Portsmouth, focused on using deep learning to detect diabetic retinopathy from retinal images. The goal was to explore how AI could make early detection more accessible, especially in regions where specialized equipment and expertise are limited.

The project started from a pressing challenge: diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness, yet screenings remain expensive and difficult to access in many parts of the world. For my final-year dissertation, I set out to investigate whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) could identify early signs of the disease with reliable accuracy.

What made this project meaningful was its dual focus — not just building a working model, but considering how such technology could be deployed in real-world settings, potentially using smartphone-compatible imaging. Retimo was my way of bridging academic research with practical healthcare impact.

Focus Areas

  • Model Development — Designing and training CNN architectures on retinal image datasets.

  • Early Detection — Testing accuracy for both early and advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy.

  • Accessibility — Exploring how low-cost imaging could work with AI-powered detection to reach more patients.

Legacy

Retimo was successfully completed and defended as part of my BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering. It later gained recognition beyond the university and has since been cited in other academic research, reinforcing its value as an early contribution to the field of AI-assisted healthcare.
